(67 - 68) HHC 228th Avn Bn Spent my first month in Ankee, bulding hooches with SSG (I want to say Waite)( bad case of CRS). I remember the memorial service for the guys of the Guns A-Go-go ship that went down in Bong Song (?). I got an OH13 to crew (CE) about that time and was sent to LZ English. I stayed there with the ship for about a month. I lived in the medics tent (big red cross on top)(the medic DEROSed about my first week there). Got there just after the ammo dump was hit (still finding live shit all over). One day I get a call to come back to Ankee to take over as CE on the Bn 6 ship (UH1D). Moved to Red Beach (north of DaNang) in late 67, then to LZ Evans in Jan. I was flying past Hue when the NVA flag went up. A few weeks later I was setting in my tent (down for the day) the sergeatnt from G (?#)(spook) comes in and asks if I would fly as gunner on a Hook test flight. I get my 60 and brain bucket and go, next thing I know we are picking up a sling load and I am on the ramp with my 60 flying low into KheSon (two days before they were relieved). My last day flying in RVN was on a weather report into Ahshaw Valley. |

To any 271st people from the original formation of the InnKeepers at Ft Benning Jun 67, to all who served in CanTho Mekong Delta all through 68. Ww lost a good guy and a a brother who loved Chinooks and flying. Last month (Jun 05) CW3 [Ret] Jerry McBee passed away in his home state of Missouri. We all remember Jerry (Mac) as a SP6 FE that crewed "Mother Goose" until it was caught in a deadly crossfire of .50 Cal Viet Cong ambush. All crewmembers survived, but the Hook did not. Hence came "Mother Goose 2". Jerry went on to serve his country after VietNam and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. He will be missed. I'm sure he'll get used to his new flight line. We were stationed together in Honduras @ Palmerola AFB from February 88 thru July 88. Although I wasn't a "hooker", I got honorary membership as the "pool ornament" due to my generous supply donation of plastic tarp to protect the man-made pool from Honduran dust! Not to mention, I was and am cute, modestly of course! My close crew chiefs were Paul Dorrity, Ernie Bryson, Chuck "waterhead" can't remember the last name and Rich Canino. |

Since I signed in back in 04, I've departed RJA (Rolf Jensen & Associates)in Atlanta GA moved to Washington DC (with RJA). Didn't like it, guess nothing changes much, DC is like doing stateside duty, way to much bullshit. Home in the US is now Palm Coast, Fl. Only 30 miles from Daytona and two of the greatest Harley gatherings each year. Now I'm with Arup Engineering, building the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Macau, China. Everyday I go to work I pass the PRC Army Barracks on the island of Cotai (part of Macau), real wierd to look up and see that red flag flying, never thought I'd be living here! Many thanks to all Hookers, the best bunch of professionals in the world. Thirty six years after my first ride in one and I still can't get it out of my blood.
