at ATTC a week later doing the same thing (SI) as well as flight

Just updating info life goes on. Was Med discharged in May
90 & went to work for Lockheed Martin. Then in 95 DynCorp
won contract. Left them in Sep 99. Moved back to MA & went
to school for A+ & MCSE. Worked for a public School system
and now retired as my sight has restricted me. I remember
before I was MED discharged my nick name was blind man givin
to me by my fellow TI's. Those days were the best if I had
it to do over I would not change a thing. So to all my fellow
Hookers past and present "Never Quit". And for all the disabled
Vets your sacifices will never be forgotten. 77 - 80 25th Inf
Div. This is when I told myself that I would work on 47s instead
of being transported by them. 47 T school was still self paced
then. Burned though it like I knew what I was doing "HA". A Co
159th Maint then along came SFC Cox & the NightStalkers. Crewed
397 with Randy Reynolds. 08-82 left for Alaska 242nd Sugerbears.
FE on ACFT! 242 HART TEAM. 06-85 left for Ft Hood. FE on 026 and
then along came the D'S (661) then FEI School in 87. After that
DA says now go to TI Course in 88. Retuned to Hood TI Shop "AKA
the Shark Pit" Great bunch of guys and The JAP G.Yamase CIV DATA
COLLECTOR. 05-90 Med Discharged. End of story. To all I served
with Thanks for the memories and feel free to drop a line. |

My younger brother, Christopher J Carey was in 132d Avn
Co at Hunter AAF in Savannah, GA and was killed in crash on
April 9, 86 mentioned on your memorial page. I believe he was
a SP4 and serving as either load specialist or crew chief. We
never got a formal accident report. Could you let us know if

Apr 71 until they were sent back to the States. I was transfered
to the 3/17 Air Cav where I finished up my active Duty career.
Joined the CT Army Natl Gd, where I worked on and crewed UH-1,
OH6 and finaly with CH-54B models. Remained with the Guard and
retired after 24 years of total service. Currently a member of
the CT organized militia, 1st Company Governor's Foot Guard. |

Rick died of a sudden and unexpected Heart Attack while
stationed at Ft Campbell KY |
This is Johanna Carr. Rick's wife. We have two children, Justin and
Katherine. They are now 9 and 6 years old. We live in Fayetteville,
North Carolina. (home of the 82nd) Life is good for us and they live
with my memories of their father. Everytime a CH-47 flies over me I
miss Rick. He was an amazing man. And amazing husband, father and
soldier. If anyone knew Rick and/or has pictures of Rick, please send
them my way. He is dearly missed.

After getting out of the Army in 77, I joined the Army Reserve in 79
and became an Army nurse using the GI Bill. I have just gone into
the Retired Reserve with the rank of CPT after 28 yrs of military
service. I think the most fun I had, though, was the time I spent
as a Crew Chief/FE. We flew A-mods in those days. My last flight
was as the FE on the acceptance flight of a new SuperC which had been
on the Presidential flight detail and was still painted in the detail
colors of gloss forest green & white with gold pinstripes. That was a
blast. The 242nd ASH, SugarBears, does not exist any longer. They have
been replaced by the 2/124th Avn, SugarBears North. Not sure of the
number designation. They fly the new D-mods. Sweet. |

Thanks to Clinton's wonderful drawdown plan I'm out. But there is
life after the military. I'm now flying for a Hospital in Wichita KS.
(Wesley Medical Center---LifeWATCH) BH222UT, single pilot IFR, LOVING
LIFE. Not quite as much power as I'm used to but still a nice machine.
I really miss the Chinook community though. You guy's are some of the

I was one of the original members of the 180-ASH Co. We assembled
the unit at Ft Benning and shipped it to VietNam in 66. It arrived in
Cam Rhan Bay, and we stayed at a place called Dong Ba Thin until they
all arrived at which time we moved to ToyHoa. There were 16 Chinooks,
and two Hueys to start, but supply got another chinook for the Cdr that
wasn't on the books |

now live in Kansas. |

Jumped out of the military to civilian life in Feb 00. Since then I went to
work for a cargo company in Michigan working on DC-9s and Falcons. 9-11 came
along and I was forced to move along to another job. I hooked up with a
company called Corporate Flight Inc in Apr 02 working on executive charter
jets and hold the Chief Inspector position. I love hearing from the old
crew and am really proud when I see what you hookers are doing on the news.

I was the first FE on 74-22280 when the unit accepted the aircraft into it's inventory. That aircraft had
a mind of it's own. I had a pair of women's panties that I got from a girl I spent the night with in Anchorage
on a TDY trip down there and I hung them above the avionics compartment with velcro tape. Sometimes they would
fall down from the wind coming through the cabin. I noticed that every time those panties would fall the aircraft
would break. So I saftey wired them to the cover of the avionics compartment. We picked up a platoon from a
communications unit and there was a full bird commander with them and a female was with them. The Col. told me
to take them down because he thought it would offend the female. I respectfully told him that if I took those
panties down the aircraft would break and of course he told me that was nonsense and he made me take them down.
We took off and about 15 min.into the flight the hyd. manifold valve blew the seal on the cap! We were in the
middle of nowhere and I had to dump the pressure and I made one of the passegers pump the handle while I kept
pouring hyd. fluid into the fill resivoir. I looked at the COL and laughed. From then on those panties stayed
hung up there.
I was also the 2nd NCOIC of the HART. Before the team was organized they just took anyone that was hanging around
the flt platoon to crew the rescues with two high pressure oxygen bottles. When we started getting so many rescue
calls they decided to organize the HART. We tied to land on the top of Mt. McKinley on Jul 4th 76 and almost crashed
because the slpoe was so steep it wouldn't let the rotor wash create a ground cushion so the pilot aborted the
landing and auto rotated for about 3000 ft. and we landed at 18,200 ft. and set the landing record for Chinook at
that time. I was also on the crew that performed the 1st winch rescue that was done at 17,000 ft on the north side
of Mt. McKinley with CW3 Bridgeman and I don't remember who was on the crew.
I am very pleased that the team is still together and doing the dangerouse rescues that we did then. The 242nd won
the AAAA award for 1976 for doing the rescues among other things we did at that time. Keep up the good work guys.
I lost all of my pictures, awards, and patches during Hurricane Katrina. Please anyone that can get mesome of the
old Sugar Bear patches and the old HART patches I sure would appreciate it more than you could know. |

I remember Gork Ampitheater getting hit by a rocket in April
69, boy that was a long time ago. Also remember sneeking into
the NCO club before Wayne and I got our stripes (the top used
to call us the Golddust twins). Loved those trips to Singapore
wooweee. The EM club at the top of the hill, rolled down that
hill a few times. Sitting in the graves have a little refreshment
from time to time. My nickname was Cripsy Critter, somehow I was
attributed to several of the latrines burning down. I was a FE on
#143,101 and several other ships, the memory is going somebody
help me. We had a dog in our hooch named three-toes. Well I can't
think of what else to say off hand so I'll wait for a reply. |

Just in time for Tet where things got just a little bit dangerous.
Mid year transfered to PhuLoi and the Geronimos. A/C there and
finally had some extra money to get stereo gear, some of which
still works to this day. Instructed Chinook Transition at Ft Rucker
til 70. Now with the Stanford Life Flight team out there saving
lives. Fly a BK117C-1 single pilot IFR ship. Still have a warm
spot in my heart for the ole Chinook, having flown 1800 hours
in them. Lot's of good memories...fine ship!!!! |

Left Army 1975 join USMC flew CH-46 & H-3 until retired in 1993.
Now Navy civilian building CH-47F simulators. My team is working
on building a Vietnam-era Chinook cockpit for the MIA/POW Full
Accounting Office search teams to use as a training device. They
intend to use it to help find the remaining eight Chinooks and
crews missing from that war. If all goes as planned we will have
an "A" model at Brooks City-Base for the Life Sciences Equipment
Lab to use by the fall of 03. Lots of cooperation from a lot of
people, the Navy for providing the expertese of their engineers to
build the device, the United Kingdom in donating a retired "C"
fuselage, from PM Cargo at Huntsville for providing the shipping
cradle and lots of management support, from the California National
Guard Museum for allowing us to use parts from their display "A"
model, and from the Life Science Equipment Lab for funding. Everything
is not done yet, we still need the official approval for the parts
from the museum and we will have to find some more funding, but it is
coming together. After Brooks finishes with the trainer it will be
returned to California for permanent display. |
