In a prior life, I used to work for Boeing-Vertol Helicopters as a flight test mechanic from 1962 to 1970 and was fortunate enough to have built (yes, with my own two hands) every variant there was of a Chinook from the "A" thru "C" models, including the little known four bladed rotor hub equipped model 234 equipped with a wing and the infamous ACH-47A Armed and Armored Chinooks. In 1966 I had the honor of being stationed in Viet Nam with the First Air Cav at An Khe in the Central Highlands as part of Boeing maintenance training team under contract to MAC-V. I was laid off in 1970 and returned fourteen years later as an Industrial Engineer assigned to the Chinook "D - Mod" Line and later the V-22 Program (which was supposed to be built back in 1992 and is still having a problem getting out the door). The Chinook is a fabulous machine and today's "F" model is something to behold. I was invited to the (Chinook) Cargo Users Conference in Huntsville, AL last year and had the pleasure of flying the "F" model simulator. It was a strange thing being without "beep" switches on the Thrust Lever as FADEC governs the powertrain. I just happened onto this site as I was thinking about a conversation I had with a Warrant Officer whose last name I believe was Clyde - we were discussing his encounters evading shoulder fired missles. I was curious as to his present status and hoped to see if there is any info on him. | |
