I was in E Co 197th Lt Inf Bde Ft Benning GA when they
headed to RVN. I wound up in the 132nd ASHC bound for
ChuLai RVN. We left Ft Benning GA in Jan 68. Flew to
Oakland CA and dprt on the USS Gen John Pope. 28 days
later we arrived in Saigon. We were transferred to Navy
LST's and taken up country to ChuLai. We were hit by a
rocket attack on our first night (we were told that Charlie
was hitting the base every 3rd night.) so the next day we
built a 5000 sandbag bunker. My PSGs was Fowler. I was an
11B door gunner. My FE was Ron Harper from Asheville NC. My
CE was Mike from Redwood City CA but I can't remember his
last name. After we were in-country for a few months we were
temporarily assigned (TDY) to Pleiku to support a Chinook
outfit that had only 2 Chinook's flying, out of 10. Those
are most of the details I can recall, as it's been over 35
years. If anyone was with the 132nd ASHC in Chu Lai in 68
please get in touch with me. If anyone can tell me how to
obtain a list of the personnel in my unit in 68 I'd be

My name is Raymond Lee. I am looking for anyone that might have known
Johnny Lee Kidd. He was killed in 1969, he was on a Chinook SP4 was
his rank I believe. I am a cousin of his that never got to meet him.
I am only 36 and he was killed when I was only 1. I would like to know
something, anything about who he was, what he was like. His brother
and family will not talk about it. I have always loved the Military,
I have many friends in the military. I am also a Modertor on military.com.

After 17 years I happened to visit with Moe Whitley at Ft Campbell.
He asked me if I ever think about workin on Hooks again. I said yeah
every other month especially since 911. He said well why don't ya. I
said I don't have an A&P. He says ya don't need one to work as a civilian
contractor. I said get out, your just foolin. He said nope, ya wanna go
on post and talk to them to see if they hiring. I said alright why not.
So I meet this awesome guy Named Carl Whitehurst and next thing ya know
I have a job at DynCorp working on Chinooks. I stayed for 4 months and
moved down to Ft Bragg and got a job with DS2 because my father was very
ill, and I needed to be closer to home. Still working the CH-47 RESET
program back in the land of the living. After being halfdead for 17 years.
War is good for business. If your looking for work on Hooks I can help
you find something pretty quick. |

It's been a long time I wish everyone knew about this site. I
think about all of our experiences often. Costa Rica, Columbia,
Ecuador, El Savador, Honduras, the times we spent traveling around
Panama itself. Anyway write me some time.
(89 - 96) I spent in the Michigan Natl Guard working in a general
support unit but no Chinooks. I was very disappointed they said we
have the MOS but no aircraft so I worked on Hueys Cobras and 58s.
Got out to spend more time with the kids. |
